The Fundamentals of Weight Loss

“I will never lose weight. Weight loss is absolutely impossible for me.” How many times have you heard that from a family member or friend? Or maybe you have made those statements a time or two yourself. The truth though is that nothing is impossible; you just need to be determined to reach your goal (as cliched as it sounds).

If you are serious about losing weight there are a number of things that you will need to change. Your MINDSET is the first thing that needs to be overhauled. We are bombarded by messages from various media that there is one pill or one piece of equipment or one food that will assist you in releasing those hated pounds within 2 weeks (ha!). The fact is that there is no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to weight loss. You will need to change the way you eat and what you eat as well as create and stick to a regular exercise plan. Once you fully understand and commit to that concept then you are on your way to losing weight and creating a healthier lifestyle.

Yes, lifestyle. Weight loss involves more than just eating a few healthy meals per week or going for a jog. It means stripping away the bad habits that contribute to your weight gain such as overeating, eating late, being inactive, not believing that you can do it and add positive habits that promote a wholesome life. Each person will need a different approach to achieving this lifestyle but here are a few points that you will need to consider that will help you to avoid failure in this phase of your journey.

MINDSET: As mentioned before, your mindset is the first aspect of this new lifestyle that will need to be adjusted. Understand that what works for your mom, or your friend or the latest celebrity may not work for you. There may be setbacks as you try to figure out what is the best regimen that works for you but there is no need to be despondent. This is a learning process that will ultimately be beneficial to your mind and body.

EFFORT: If you are committed to this phase of your life you need to know that it will take effort. Weight loss doesn’t happen overnight (if it does, please see a doctor). It will take weeks, months or even years of intense workouts, discipline to stick to a healthy diet and other lifestyle changes that you have made. Keep your eyes on the prize and push forward to the finish line. Focus is the key.

EXERCISE: Life today lends itself quite easily to a sedentary lifestyle but exercise can be just as much or even more fun than sitting around watching the latest series; it doesn’t have to be a chore. Play ball with your kids, play tennis, go jogging, take your kids to the mall and walk around. These are all great forms of exercise and they will help you burn the calories.

DIET: This doesn’t refer to the latest fad being used to lose weight. Your diet is food that you consume every day. You will need to do your research to find out what works best for you and will get you closer to your goal. Then you will have to be disciplined enough to stick to what will push you toward a fit and healthy life even when that second piece of cake is just calling your name. Afterall we are what we eat and if you eat healthily then it is natural that you will become more healthy. If
